MediaRich® servers are designed for a shared deployment scenario, where a MediaRich server farm would access a common repository and share system properties, or a redundant deployment scenario, where the data set and system properties would be duplicated on each MediaRich server.
MediaRich servers process requests from MediaRich clients. MediaRich servers support the Windows® and Solaris™ 7 and 8 operating systems, and integrate with Microsoft's® IIS and Apache's Web server software in the following combinations:
Windows 2000/2003 and IIS (recommended configuration):

Each MediaRich server has two key components:

The MediaGenerator

Web server software
The MediaGenerator
The MediaGenerator component does the actual work of generating images in response to client requests. Depending on the nature of the request, the MediaGenerator take one of three actions:

Return an image from the cache

Generate an image and store it in the cache

Generate an image and stream it back to the requesting client
Note that an external hardware cache or a content distribution network can be substituted for the local server cache.
Web Server Software
The Web server software component of a MediaRich server handles media requests from the Internet. The requirements vary depending on the platform used.
For Microsoft Windows 2000 configurations:
Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0
For Sun Microsystems Solaris 7 or 8 configurations:
Apache 1.3.12
An industry standard HTTP load balancer is suggested for configurations with multiple MediaRich servers generating and delivering images.
